An Introduction to Map Reading

From the Course Leader: This four hour ‘learning by doing’ course teaches you to know exactly where you are at all times on a routed walking scale map extract (1:25k) in the course leader’s book ’60 Choice Walks in the Chilterns’ (RRP £10) which is included in the price of the course. You learn as you go along on a very scenic 6 mile walk around The National Trust Ashridge Estate.

The book is aimed at both beginners and experienced walkers (having walks included ranging from 2-13 miles) and should serve you well for many years, without the need to buy OS maps until you’ve exhausted the ones in the book…. by which time you’ll be a very experienced map reader!

Feedback from last course: ‘Great event, Dick Chapman is an inspiration! I learnt a lot from him on the day and he has inspired me to do a lot more map reading driven walking in the Chilterns using his book!’

Feedback from previous course: ‘Excellent event, very enjoyable and informative. We will definitely use the book provided to do other walks using our new knowledge. Thank you’

The two main reasons why participants have come on the course are: ‘I was fed up with getting lost’ and ‘ I am a member of a walking group and I want the confidence to lead a walk when it’s my turn to do so.’
