Spring History Walk - Watlington Hill

Originally published at: Spring History Walk - Watlington Hill - Chiltern Society

Join Tim Horton, a former Lecturer and speaker, for a history (and some flora and fauna) walk on Watlington Hill.

Tim will discuss the importance of this famous ‘outrider’ to the Chilterns for wildlife and explain its role in the observation of tracts of England from the 16th century to the Cold War. He will also relate the story of the adoption of Watlington Hill by the National Trust in the 1940s and will talk of the visitors to the area of the Hill… including DH Lawrence, Lord Kitchener, Edward Thomas, the port and Oliver Cromwell.

The walk has no ascent, will be easy-paced and short-distanced. Meet at the NT car park on Hill Road Watlington (charges apply to non-members).
